About the Artist
Here’s where you get to know more about how I create my unique artwork
The beginnings
As a child and well into adulthood, I thought I had no talent for or interest in art. Then almost by chance I found that I enjoyed being creative and this set me on an exciting journey of learning and discovery.
In 2019 I gave up my job as a project manager so I could spend more time on my art. I see similarities in the way I worked in IT and my art practice; the detail in my artwork is held within a designed structure, the experiments in the studio are similar to the IT analysis tasks and of course my planning skills often come in handy before exhibitions etc
The inspiration
My work is primarily inspired by nature. This can be unfamiliar landscapes or some element of nature that I haven’t really noticed before. I enjoy exploring how the new subject can inform an artwork and the possibilities for creating it. Often my work has a feeling of spaciousness.
Creative explorations
When starting a new series of work, I take time to notice what elements of my inspiration I’m most drawn to and use this as the starting point for my materials and design experiments. This is a really enjoyable process and one that creates unique pieces of art that are abstracted from but have connections to, the source; pieces that tell their own story. I’m very happy if I can find a different angle on things or include something slightly quirky.
Materials and creating the work
Print is often at the centre of my final work, whether that be on cloth or paper. More recently I’m being drawn back to using print as a method of layering detail and colour rather than to create a defined image. When the work is on cloth, it usually has additional marks added with stitch.
With my interest in the natural environment and the growing awareness of the impact we’re having on the planet, I’m enjoying working with natural pigments. It seems the perfect match for art work inspired by nature.
Exhibiting and working with other artists
I am a print member at Digswell Arts and Herts Visual Arts and really value being part of a wider artistic community.
I regularly show my work in exhibitions and as part of Open Studios. My work has twice been shortlisted for the Chaiya Art Award and recently long listed for the Jackson’s art prize.
Radio Interview
In the summer 22 I had a very enjoyable conversation with Leslie Tate from Decorum Radio, which was broadcast on 24th August 22. We discuss inspiration, ways of working and the ‘Marking Our Way’ project. You can listen to the interview here.
