Cold Snap
Patterns made in the snow are unpredictable. When I was thinking about how I could interpret the snow patterns in cloth, it seemed appropriate that I used a similarly unpredictable process called ‘breakdown printing’ or ‘deconstructed screen printing’. This led to a whole series of black and white inspired by the winter landscape. The is unique, one-off print which could not be reproduced.
To me the top portion of ‘Cold Snap’ speaks of the place at the very edge of the road where the cars do not drive and the snow is relatively undisturbed. The snow in the lower portion is more churned up where the tyres have driven through the snow and the patterns resemble those of a tyre. The darker areas are stitched to highlight the patterns and suggest the rougher surface of the tarmac.
